McDonalds

For some reason, I knew it was bound to happen. For the first time in its history, McDonalds wasn’t profitable. Now, I know it’s probably because I found out I have Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholestrol and have stopped my weekly visits for two double cheese burgers, but I think things were set in motion a long time ago.

People are smart, contrary to what you would think when someone tries to sue McDonalds for making them fat. A large majority of people scoff at the stupidity and are able to choose for themselves. And people are doing just that, choosing a better way. In the case of fast food, a healthier way. I know I am growing tired of the whole burgers and fries thing. I personally am addicted to burritos. Healthier? Probably. Tastier? Absolutely. Can I get them from McDonald’s? Sorta.

You see, I think McDonalds (and other fast food chains) are hedging their bets on a fast food flop. McDonalds has a large stake in Donatoes Pizza (ok not exactly going the healthy route there) and Chipotle Mexican grill. Wendy’s also has ties to the Mexican Fast Food restaraunt Baja Fresh. Maybe it’s not so much a “healthier food” trend but a Mexican Food trend. Afterall, the Census Bureau just reported that Latin Americans make up the largest minority now.

Whatever it is, I don’t think McDonalds or the other fast food companies will go away. They need to evolve, but they aren’t going anywhere.

Now, if Burger could figure out that meatless Whopper…
